The Saint Haralambos Outreach committee is a wonderful way to give back to the community. Our volunteers currently work with our Meals on Wheels ministry, the parish Agape ministry, and Bessie's Soup Kitchen. There is always room for more people to come and help our ministries reach many more families. Sometimes we get caught up in our day to day stresses we forget there are some individuals struggling to simply put food on the dinner table. The ministries of our Outreach Committee are a wonderful way to give back and follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Meals on Wheels
Testimonial: "The Meals on Wheels program of Holy Taxiarhai & St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church has been wonderful to my family as we struggle with our grief for the untimely death of my beloved wife and our two children's precious mother, +Katerina Karpouzis. From Kyriako's kind and diligent telephone inquiries as to the needs of our family, to the dedicated volunteers who carefully deliver fresh homemade delicious meals, the support of this dedicated crew, and the parish more broadly, has been heartwarming and uplifting. The Meals on Wheels team deliver food, yes, but they also deliver spiritual nourishment, family care, and a commitment to community connection and a realization of faith. We are grateful for their dedicated work; They have supported and fed me and our two preteen children, both physically and spiritually."
Meals on wheels delivers meals to families and individuals dealing with various circumstances in life. Some families are having a tough time financially and others are caring for a sick loved one and/or having a tough time emotionally. Our program is a way to tell our community we are thinking about them and here for them. We deliver a meal that consists of soup, bread roll, main dish, side, veggie, dessert and fresh fruit. We also deliver a bag of groceries donated from our Agape ministry.
We typically meet on the third Saturday of every month and begin cooking around 8am and start delivering at 11:30am. If you are interested in helping with the cooking, prep, or delivery please contact Anna Prekas at firstname.lastname@example.org. All are welcome!
Bessie’s Soup Kitchen
Bessie’s Soup kitchen is located in Des Plaines and operates on dedicated volunteers from our Church. Once a month we help cook and serve individuals who are in need of a hot meal and some good company. It really is a great experience for people of all ages to come and volunteer. We should never be too busy to give back to our community. We must follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ to help those less fortunate than us.
COVID update: Because of COVID, we are currently cooking the food from 1-4pm on the 4th Monday of the month and then deliver it to the First United Methodist Church in Des Plaines, who deliveries it to families in need. Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated.
